Fort Myers college student goes missing while swimming in Israel

TeNiya Nora Jones Missing: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Jones and her friends - a 20-year-old woman from the District of Columbia who attends the University of Kentucky and a 21-year-old man from IL who attends West Virginia University in Morgantown, according to family - had made a decision to take a weekend trip to Israel before returning Friday to the United States.

The body of TeNiya Jones, 19, was discovered Monday when it washed up on the shore in Tel Aviv, two days after she was reported missing, Times of Israel reported.

Two of the students were able to make it back to the shore, but Jones was not.

'The furthest I've known her to go is to stand and wade at the shore of the water and take pictures'.

Officials from the U.S. Embassy in Israel also have been alerted and have been involved throughout the last 24 hours, communicating with Jones' family, Council on International Exchange (CIEE), and United Kingdom officials.

The University of Kentucky has made arrangements to send Jones' mother to Tel Aviv.

Like most teens, Jones posted to social media, sharing photos shortly before her swim.

Jones was in the International Baccalaureate program at Dunbar High School, Thomas-Mora said.

According to one of the students, a strong current pulled the three of them out deeper to sea while they were swimming.

Capilouto added that the university is sending the remainder of students back to Amman before the program concludes this week.

Our thoughts and prayers are with TeNiya, her family and the students and others impacted. The group was based in Amman, Jordan for the summer.

Late Saturday evening, Jones' family was alerted. "We will do everything possible to provide whatever support is needed", Capilouto said. Jones was a biology major with a minor in Islamic studies, which was the reason she was studying in Jordan, her mom said. "She is loved. You were easily attracted to her personality", Thomas-Mora told the News-Press.

Her body was found on Monday.

Associate Provost Sue Roberts is traveling to Tel Aviv and should be there sometime Tuesday, said United Kingdom spokesperson Jay Blanton.

Jones' cousin reached out for help in a tweet, saying that Jones "is like any other black girl who doesn't like to get her hair wet".
