Astronomers Find Massive Underground Reservoir of Liquid Water on Mars

This image provided by the ESA INAF shows an artist's rendering of the Mars Express spacecraft probing the southern hemisphere of Mars. At upper right is the planet's southern ice cap

In order to remain liquid in such cold conditions (the research team estimate between -10 and -30 Celsius where it meets the ice above), the water likely has a great many salts dissolved in it.

The findings, which are published in the journal Science, were made possibly by Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), an instrument that resides on the Mars Express spacecraft.

Astronomers used radar data from the orbiting European spacecraft Mars Express to find the water.

They obtained 29 sets of radar samplings, mapping out an area exhibiting a very sharp change in its associated radar signal, about 1.5 km below the surface of the ice and extending sideways about 20 km.

Researchers are still waiting to see if any more bodies of water are found on the Red planet or if this was a one-off discovery.

A water pond would suggest the presence of salts that, like on icy roads, lower the freezing point of water, he said.

The pulses that came back created the aforementioned "well-defined, 20-kilometer-wide zone" and found that the radar reflected the brightness of the liquid water.

Liquid water is considered as one of the necessary ingredients for life to emerge, and finding it on Mars is promising, but scientists have yet to find any evidence that the planet is or was habitable.

The location's radar profile resembled that of subglacial lakes found beneath Earth's Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.

Mars is now cold and dry, but 3.6 billion years ago was home to plenty of liquid water.

Life on Mars has suddenly become more of a probability than it ever has been before, after scientists have located stable "liquid water" on the planet. The blue triangle indicates an area of very high reflectivity, interpreted as being caused by the presence of a reservoir of water, about a mile below the surface. They would have to drill through the ice first to sample the water below. Though the mission has been in progress since 2003, this is their first major piece of evidence that liquid water now exists anywhere on the red planet.

Nonetheless, Wednesday's announcement is garnering significant attention, something Dmitri Titov, ESA's Mars Express project scientist, called a "much-awaited result".

"This subsurface anomaly on Mars has radar properties matching water or water-rich sediments", Roberto Orosei, principal investigator of the MARSIS experiment and lead author of the paper, said in a press release. After that, the discovery of a liquid lake is groundbreaking news.

"This lake, if it really is there, would be a prime place to look for life - after all, we have similar things on Earth, like the lakes buried beneath Antarctica, and life has been found to exist and thrive down there".
