The FBI reportedly seized more than 100 Cohen recordings pertaining to Trump

New Trump-Cohen audio recording captures talk of Playboy model payoff

Two things. First, Trump and Cohen seemed to be discussing the McDougal payoff explicitly in the context of the campaign and, second, Cohen seems to be acting as a de facto agent of the campaign in maneuvering to silence McDougal before Election Day.

The word "cash" may reveal Trump's intent to keep secret a scheme that was created to protect him from a shameful truth - his betrayal of his wife - and might also violate election laws that require every campaign-related expenditure be made public.

Cohen then shifts the conversation. Those are both troublesome things for Trump - not because of McDougal's situation but because of the payoff to Stormy Daniels, which *was* actually completed and which would be a legal problem for him if it's deemed to have been made for the goal of influencing an election, i.e.an unreported campaign contribution. The company paid McDougal for her story about her rumored affair with the president but never published it, effectively gagging McDougal.

The Department of Justice is looking into alleged hush money paid to women who claim they had a relationship with Mr Trump.

It isn't clear whether Mr. Cohen makes any indication on the tape that he arranged the payment to Ms. Clifford in order to bolster Mr. Trump's campaign. Weisselberg has detailed information about the Trump Organization's operations, business deals and finances.

"It clearly indicates that the president did not want to pay with cash". But it would be a harder case to make if the payment was seen as merely created to protect Trump, who is married, from embarrassment in his personal or private life.

The tape was reportedly made two months before the 2016 presidential election and weeks before the Trump campaign denied any knowledge about Karen McDougal's allegations of a 10-month fling with the tycoon.

At the very least, the tape suggests Mr Trump was aware that discussions were taking place to buy the rights to Ms McDougal's story.

"I did it on my own", Cohen said, according to the Journal. "The vast majority of the media is reporting this as if Trump said "Pay in cash" because it sounds more guilty if that's what he said".

The tape then cuts off abruptly - a fact the president jumped on.

The government seized at last 12 audio tapes from Cohen, Trump's former longtime lawyer, a court filing on Monday revealed.

In an ABC News interview released on July 2, Cohen said his family and the country commanded his "first loyalty", the first fuel to that speculation.

When he released the tapes of President Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen, Cohen's lawyer not only caused a media firestorm, but he may have also pulled back the curtain on Trump's systematic tactics to quiet women from his past. On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported on a deeper alliance forged between Cohen and American Media, which it said federal investigators were examining as part of the investigation into Cohen's business affairs.
