Sony Announces World’s First 48 Megapixel Camera For Smartphones

Image Sony

The IMX586's small pixel size allows Sony to cram a lot into a sensor that is small enough to fit into a smartphone chassis. Normally, such a high megapixel count on such a small chip would result in poor nighttime shooting capacities. During low light shooting, the signals from the four adjacent pixels are added, raising the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 1.6-micron pixels (12 megapixels), resulting in bright, low noise images and videos.

You see, Sony has filtered the IMX586 with 2x2 arrays of red, blue, and green pixels, rather than the traditional Bayer array of one red, one blue, and two green color filters per 2x2-pixel sub-array.

Today, Sony unveiled the world's first smartphone camera sensor with a crazy-high resolution of 48 megapixels and a pixel size of 0.8?m. Sony included its exposure control technology and signal processing functionality directly into the image sensor, which enables real-time output a much better dynamic range four times greater than conventional units.

Add all of this together with a dynamic range that's four times greater "than conventional products", and it sure does sound like Sony's got a victor on its hands. Sony promises that scenes with both bright and dark areas can be captured with minimal highlight blowout or loss of detail in shadows.

'These days, high-end smartphone models require even greater imaging quality from their cameras, ' Sony said.

As for video, the sensor is able to capture 4K video at 90 frames per second, while 1080p and 720p resolutions can hit 240 and 480 frames per second, respectively. It beats the current highest-resolution sensors, used in the Huawei P20 Pro and Nokia Lumia 1020's - 40-megapixel and 41-megapixel respectively.

However, although Sony has announced the introduction of the new sensor, the firm has provided no information on what manufacturers will be incorporating the tech in their devices.
