Killed, Including 9 Family Members, After Missouri Duck Boat Capsizes During Storm

A family of mourners stop to place a flower on a World War II DUKW boat used by Ride The Ducks tours

Nine of the 17 people who died when a tour boat sank in a Missouri lake were from the same family, according to the governor of Missouri.

He said it is unknown whether the captain or Ride the Ducks staff checked the forecast prior to going on the lake.

The company had been operating for 47 years without incident, Mr Pattinson told CBS, adding that the captain had over 16 years of experience on the water. "I couldn't hear screams, it felt like I was out there on my own", said Coleman.

Video footage captured from the lakeshore showed two amphibious vessels, known as duck boats for their ability to operate on land and water, struggling to move through the waves. A survivor, who lost nine members of her family, shared what happened when she was tossed into the water. The tourist town mourned Friday for more than a dozen sightseers who were killed when a duck boat capsized and sank.

"Canopies present major safety risks that need to be addressed. both adults and children wearing life jackets are at risk of being drowned if entrapped by the overhead canopy", the NTSB said of the sinking.

"It's a warning telling people to take shelter", he said. One woman died and another person was seriously injured.

He said an off-duty sheriff's deputy working security helped rescue people and that recovery efforts were ongoing, with some passengers still to be accounted for.

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader previously confirmed to that media outlet that the captain was among those who survived the accident.

A thunderstorm brought winds of 50 to 65 miles per hour to the area shortly before the first 911 call came in at 7:09 p.m.

The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the area on Thursday, saying conditions were ripe for 70mph winds.

Afterward, the National Transportation Safety Board warned that the boats' canopy roofs presented a hazard, making it hard for people, even those wearing life jackets, to escape if one of the vessels capsized. The Coast Guard regulates them on the water, but on land, laws vary by city and state.

The vessel was owned by Ripley Entertainment company, whose "Ride the Ducks" website on Saturday said the business is closed "while we support the investigation".

During a typical tour, after some time on the roads, the Seattle duck boats eventually make their way on to Lake Union.

In a statement Friday, Boston Duck Tours said "We continuously monitor the weather conditions from our three locations".

The incident in Missouri was part of a storm system that struck much of the Midwest late Thursday, according to meteorologists.
