Carmelo Anthony traded by OKC to Atlanta, but waived for free agency

OKC Thunder Trade Carmelo Anthony To Atlanta Hawks

Carmelo Anthony #7 of the Oklahoma City Thunder watches on against the Charlotte Hornets during their game at Spectrum Center on January 13, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have acquired point guard Dennis Schroeder from the Atlanta Hawks and the 24-year-old will help as a scoring option off the bench. But according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Hawks soon will waive Melo, who appears to already have his next destination lined up.

According to many experts, Anthony is most likely to end up playing for the Houston Rockets next season. Schroder makes $15.5 million per year compared to Anthony's $28 million for 18-19.

Schroder is a German worldwide point guard who averaged 19.4 points and 6.2 assists last season, while Muscala is a power forward who averaged 7.6 points per game in 2017.

Anthony's time in Oklahoma City lasted just one season, where the 34-year-old averaged 16.2 points and 5.8 rebounds over 78 games. He can also play together with Westbrook at times when OKC is looking for more backcourt offense.

Enter Muscala, a serviceable big who opted into the final year of his contract and who can give Philadelphia a facsimile of what Ersan Ilyasova did after joining them for the stretch run last season before leaving to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks. Anthony averaged 11.8 points in the series, shooting just 37.5 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from 3-point range. But Schroder also should see significant minutes with Westbrook and George in what Donovan hopes is an offensive attack built on speed and ball movement. Anthony will be waived, and he will join team of his choice. The Atlanta Hawks became the focal point of those discussions recently and on Thursday the two sides managed to come to an agreement on a deal. He was selected by the Mavericks with the No. 21 pick of the 2015 NBA Draft.
