Fuchsia OS might take Android's place 5 years from now

The EU has fined Google a record €4.3bn over Android antitrust

European regulators came down hard on another US tech giant Wednesday, fining Google a record $5 billion for forcing cellphone makers that use the company's Android operating system to install Google search and browser apps.

The EC also called out Google for making payments to certain OEMs and mobile operators on the condition that they exclusively pre-installed the Google Search app on their devices and for and barring OEMs from using forked versions of the Android OS.

But it's not going to be easy to just ditch Android, and one of Bloomberg's sources actually suggests the company may not be that serious about the idea - calling it a "senior-engineer retention project" created to keep Google's talent busy so they don't go and join rival companies. "They truly have taken advantage of the US, but not for long!"

The fine is the largest ever issued by the European Commission in an antitrust case and will surpasses the €2.42bn penalty issued to the Silicon Valley firm a year ago.

Vestager said Google had shut out rivals by forcing major phone makers including South Korea's Samsung and China's Huawei to pre-install its search engine and Google Chrome browser, thereby freezing out rivals.

Moreover, Google was given 90 days to stop what the European Union said were "illegal practices" on contracts with handset manufacturers that push Google services in front of users.

Mr Pichai added the decision from the European Union had the chance to "upset the careful balance" Google has "struck with Android".

European Union antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said she very much liked the U.S., countering a reported remark by President Donald Trump that she "hated" the country.

Google provides Android free to smartphone manufacturers and generates most of its revenue from selling advertisements that appear along with search results.

Google is an ambitious company to say the least, and the individual teams that work on what's coming down the pipe are just as focused on building new and exciting products.

That figure represented a doubling in global revenue in only four years. There are more than two billion Android devices - including phones, tablets, and watches - being used around the world every month.
