Kerber beats Williams to claim maiden Wimbledon title

10 months after baby, Serena in Wimbledon final vs. Kerber

Angelique Kerber has torn up the script to land her maiden Wimbledon crown and deny Serena Williams a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title. And then there is the out-of-category strength it took to return to the top of her profession at 36 years old with a baby on her shoulder, and scars on her belly and in her lungs from the childbirth ordeal that nearly killed her.

After all the time away, Williams spoke about being impressed with herself for just reaching the final.

"I also needed to find the motivation after 2016, which was incredible".

At the conclusion of the men's match, Serena Williams will attempt to win an eighth Wimbledon title as she faces Angelique Kerber in a repeat of the 2016 final. I was trying to staying there, waiting in the locker room, getting ready for my final'.

"I'm just me, that's all I can be", Williams said about playing as a mother. "I feel like everyone says, 'You're so thin when you breast-feed.' I'm going to be totally frank ..." she said. I have so much to look forward to. "Now she's supporting me in a different role, but our friendship is still exactly the same", she said. She also explained that she was unsure "how I would be able to come back" after taking time off to be a new mom, and that making it to the Wimbledon final was a "great opportunity".

Now will come the sternest on-court test Williams has faced: Kerber, a former No. 1 and two-time major champion with a lefty stroke and never-give-up-on-a-ball defense. She dropped just one set en route to her match with Serena. Two unforced errors helped Serena to break back at love and level at 2-2.

The 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber took advantage of an error-strewn performance by seven-times champion Serena Williams to become the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graf in 1996.

Last November, Kerber announced her partnership with Fisette - previous coach of Johanna Konta, Simona Halep and Kim Clijsters - and her tennis has been on an upwards trajectory since.
