Apple Music narrows Spotify’s lead in U.S. music market

Apple Music might have overtaken Spotify and have more paying US subscribers

While services like Pandora or YouTube bring in massive amounts of users, they don't boast as big of a paid subscription base as Spotify. Today, five months later, it has reportedly come to pass. Well, it didn't take that long because according to industry sources, Apple's music streaming service already has more paying USA customers than its rival.

Eyes and ears have been on Spotify for its major strides in the music streaming world. Both Apple Music and Spotify have just over 20 million paid subscribers in the United States, with Apple's service barely taking the lead. Back in February, the publication reported Apple Music would surpass Spotify in USA paid subscriptions if it maintained a growth rate of 5 percent. The data also suggested Apple was getting stronger user engagement and banking more money per subscription due to its more limited discount options. However, this comparison also indicates Apple Music is more popular in the USA than Spotify.

Looked at more broadly, however, Apple serves what should be a fairly narrow market of iPhone owners, where Spotify is popular on both Android and iPhone. As MBW notes, there are a number of factors that could've contributed to this, including the fact the album appeared on Apple Music right at midnight while it wasn't available on Spotify until a couple hours later. 70 million of these enjoy the paid tier, Spotify Premium, whereas the others use the ad-supported free tier of the service.
