Pelosi on Ocasio-Cortez's win: They made a choice in 1 district

Rep. Joseph Crowley and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi following a meeting of the House Democratic caucus at the U.S. Capitol Jan. 31 2018 in Washington DC

"It doesn't take a hundred years to do this, it takes political courage".

Amanda Litman, a former Clinton campaign staffer who cofounded Run For Something, an organization that helps young Democrats run for local office, says Ocasio-Cortez's win illustrates that the party is taking women of color seriously - as both voters and candidates. That Ocasio-Cortez won on the turf of the Queens Democratic Party, among the state's most entrenched party operations, could spell a death knell for the state machine.

The victories for Ocasio-Cortez and Jealous came just a day after The New York Times published a piece titled, "Bernie Sanders Is Winning Converts".

Her plans for the House seat, which she is heavily favored to win in November, don't stop at progressive legislation. A quick comparison of campaign finances hints at what Ocasio-Cortez means when she talks about Crowley's priorities, and may also get to the heart of why 57.5 percent of New York's 14th Congressional district voters, where the average income is $47,000, chose her.

As recently as November, Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender.

Mr Crowley, 56, now the powerful chairman of the House Democratic Caucus who was seen as a potential future House Speaker, was unseated by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist who is nearly half his age and was a volunteer in Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign. "And that is part of the structure of this agency", she said.

Holtzman is offering two pieces of what she calls "common sense" advice: First, Ocasio-Cortez needs to develop a deep appreciation for the city's pizza because she'll be eating a lot on the go.

She launched a campaign against him, a grassroots effort that made history when she won.

"Women have a harder time being seen as legitimate", Ocasio-Cortez said, referring specifically to Nixon and NY state attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout, all progressive candidates who join Ocasio-Cortez's call to abolish ICE. "She is likely to be in headlines for years to come", the Times summed up, describing the outcome as "the most significant loss for a Democratic incumbent in more than a decade, and one that will reverberate across the party and the country". She ran on a platform of Medicare for All, abolishing Ice and a federal jobs guarantee. "After 20 years of the same representation, we have to ask: Who has NY been changing for?"

I count myself a proud supporter.

Crowley was expected to win the primary over Ocasio-Cortez, a former presidential campaign staffer for Vermont Sen.

Holtzman says she's excited to see what the 28-year-old can do.

But Ocasio-Cortez instead framed her campaign as a return to the party's roots. Washington, however, is dominated by an army of lobbyists, lawyers, economists and consultants who insist that money in politics always matters more than people.

While Foley's district had grown more conservative during his tenure, Crowley's district had shifted from a largely Irish-American population to a multi-racial area in which whites are less than half the population, Thompson noted.

Trump mocked Crowley on Twitter too.

Sullivan, who also works in politics, said voters have been desparate for leadership, and Ocasio-Cortez delivers. When she learned she beat the incumbent candidate, the shock was written all over face.

These races echoed the divide in the Democratic Party that was highlighted by the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, a breach which has only intensified since the 2016 election.
