First Lady Melania Trump Makes Trip To Visit Border Detention Facilities

Trump's order to end his family separation policy was purely political — not a change of heart

Mrs. Trump had changed into a pale yellow jacket before arriving in McAllen and wore that during the more than hour-long visit to the center, but donned the green jacket once again as she returned to the White House.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ivanka praised her father for ending the administration's policy of separating migrant children from their parents after they cross the US-Mexico border, calling the president's Wednesday executive order a "critical action".

Speaking during a press conference, Trump said she was eager to see the children and learn more about the process.

Because ICE lacks the detention capacity to increase the number of families it holds in detention, the official acknowledged that many migrant parents and children will likely be released from custody while they await court hearings.

She planned to tour a children's shelter in McAllen that houses about 60 children ages 5-17 from Honduras and El Salvador, and a border patrol processing center, but had to skip the latter because of flooding.

Trump's order, an unusual reversal by him, moves parents with children to the front of the line for immigration proceedings, but it does not end a 10-week-old "zero tolerance" policy that calls for prosecution of immigrants crossing the border illegally under the country's criminal entry statute.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday created to stop migrant family separations. "And I also like to ask you how I can help to these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible".

The political compromise the first lady had sought so far has not materialized.

"What is the goal of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct", Trump tweeted.

But a spokeswoman for the US Department of Justice said the report was inaccurate.

The bill offers a potential pathway to citizenship to many young immigrants who arrived in the USA illegally as children but also provides money for Mr Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico.

'We don't like to see families separated.

When asked Thursday if the first lady supports the policy, Grisham said, "She supports that the law should be followed".

"She told her staff she wanted to go and we made that happen", she said.

But King believes President Trump's executive order on Wednesday took much of the heat off of Republicans, even though the order allows the administration to continue separating families and does nothing to reunite the thousands already separated.

Even though Trump has acted unilaterally to stem the family separations, lawmakers still prefer a legislative fix.
