England produced a batting masterclass in third ODI, says Ricky Ponting

Alex Hales

England's impressive one-day team posted a world-record ODI score on their way to securing a series win over Australia.

In the same region of East Midlands, only 33KMs away, England hosted Australia at Trent Bridge for the third ODI of their ongoing five-match series.

Bairstow (139) and Jason Roy (82) were England's first two driving forces in an opening stand of 159 which was broken only when the latter was run out by an excellent throw from D'Arcy Short in the leg-side deep, trying to steal a tight second run in the 20th over.

Bairstow, on 30, skyed a drive off Tye but Marcus Stoinis failed to hold an extremely tough chance as he ran back from mid-on. Only once in the 56-year history of List A cricket - when Surrey scored 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007 - has any side scored more.

For Bairstow, in magnificent form, it was his fourth ODI century in six innings and his sixth in 19 since his recall less than a year ago.

In the intervening years, they have developed into the most exciting, destructive and successful one-day team in the world.

It wasn't just Australian wickets that tumbled at Trent Bridge yesterday - so did one-day records as England obliterated their old foe in sensational style.

Australia captain Tim Paine, who won the toss, used eight bowlers but was unable to stem the torrent of runs. Morgan then arrived to hit 50 off 22 balls, the fastest ever by an England player. But he was back to his best at his home ground in Nottingham and reached three figures even quicker than Bairstow, his seventh worldwide ton coming off 62 balls. In a series of social media posts, Ganguly wrote, "To see nearly 500 runs scored in 50 overs in England is scaring me, bout the health of the game and where it's going".

Morgan hit six of them and, for good measure, went past Ian Bell as England's all-time record ODI runscorer.

Only details remained - and they all favoured world number ones England who can therefore contemplate the possibility of a first 5-0 ODI whitewash of their Ashes rivals. Off-spinner Moeen Ali took 3/28. The top three are a huge asset to have.

"The wicket was still terrific when we batted on it as well".

"We just ran into some guys that are red-hot at the moment and they put us to the sword a bit".
