Phil Mickelson Hits Moving Ball Out of Frustration at U.S. Open

Phil Mickelson reacts to a shot from the fescue on the fifth hole during the third round of the U.S. Open. More

Phil Mickelson became the talk of tonight's round in the US Open when sanctioned for putting a moving ball.

Upset at how things were going, Mickelson hit a bad putt on the 13th hole and the ball rolled past the hole.

Commentating on the incident for Fox, former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger said: "That's the most out of character I have ever seen Phil". Mickelson's shocking display in the third round earned him a two-stroke penalty and led to a 10 on the hole, an 81 overall.

As the biggest bridesmaid in U.S. Open history with a record six runner-up finishes, one of those coming at this same (but different) Shinnecock Hills course back in 2004, Phil Mickelson had to be a bit frustrated coming into his third round. "The last time I saw something like that was John Daly at the '99 [U.S.] Open at Pinehurst".

"I've never seen anything like that from a world-class player in my life", odd said. "He's putted bad enough that I think he just snapped at how bad his speed was on that putt".

The 48-year-old slipped down the leaderboard with four bogeys around the turn before racking up a sextuple-bogey during a freaky incident at the par-four 13th.

Guess what: He was back the next year at Pebble Beach, where he pumped three shots into the Pacific Ocean on the famed 18th and hit another shot into someone's backyard.

Regardless, Mickelson took plenty of heat from the announcers and those on Twitter.

Instead, in a surprising post-round interview, the American claimed that his decision to putt his moving ball back up the green was indeed a deliberate action. I took the 2-shot penalty and moved on.

Rather than wait to see where the ball might end up, Mickelson literally ran after the ball and hit it again as it was still moving. "As a result, he incurred a two stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 14-5".
