Suspected Toronto serial killer charged with 8th murder

Toronto police to provide update on Bruce McArthur investigation Monday

Toronto police detective Hank Idsinga said that Kanagaratnam's direct family, who live in Sri Lanka, were informed over the weekend of his death.

Kanagaratnam's remains were recovered from garden planters at a home in central Toronto where McArthur kept his landscaping equipment.

The new charge is for the death of Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, who arrived in Canada from Sri Lanka in 2010.

Investigators say he was identified after they released photographs of the man and appealed to the public for help.

So far police have not found any links between Kanagaratnam and Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village or LGBT communities.

Police said last week that they had identified the victim but did not release the name until today.

Sergeant Idsinga said that the John Doe in the photo was eventually identified as Kanagaratnam with the help of an unspecified global government agency.

"This doesn't quite fit the profile we have seen before...we don't know how he had contact with Bruce McArthur".

McArthur was previously charged in the murders of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam and Abdulbasir Faizi.

Bruce McArthur has officially been charged with 8 murders now.

Bruce McArthur was originally arrested on January 18th. He would have been 37 years old at the time of his death, Idsinga said.

"We have lots of searches left to do as the weather gets warmer", Idsinga said. It's unknown whether he will be facing further charges, but investigators are looking into murders and disappearances going back as far as 1975. The photo, which seems to be of a deceased man, was found on McArthur's computer during the police investigation.

Idsinga said police believe he was murdered sometime between September 3 and December 14 in 2015.

Police say they plan to investigate at least 70 more properties where McArthur is believed to have worked starting next month, and also remain on the scene of McArthur's east-Toronto apartment.

He has no immediate family in Canada and was never reported as missing.
