Trump Wants Judge To Stop Review Of Materials Seized In Cohen Raids

U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen exits a hotel in New York City U.S

Mr. Cohen's lawyers have objected to the use of a taint team and, in yet another unusual move, a lawyer for Mr. Trump filed an emergency motion to the court on Sunday night, saying that the president also objected to that "extraordinary measure".

US President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer has arrived at a Manhattan court for a hearing over documents seized as part of a federal investigation that could cast a harsh light on Trump's business and personal relationships.

Cohen had declined to name the client for privacy reasons, but the judge ordered him to provide a name. Instead, they said, those documents are now being reviewed by a "taint team" - a group of separate investigators walled off from prosecutors, who are primarily responsible for separating out materials that fall under attorney-client privilege.

Adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who is not party to the proceedings, made a decision to show up and call a press conference over an unrelated dispute she has with Mr Cohen. Lawyer Stephen Ryan also lost a bid to keep secret a mystery client of Cohen's he described as a "prominent person" who would be embarrassed by the revelation, the New York Times reports in a separate story.

Donald Trump's personal attorney had at least 10 clients between 2017 and 2018, including the President, the former GOP fundraiser Elliot Broidy who acknowledged paying $1.6 million to a Playboy model he had an affair with, and one client who asked not to be identified, lawyers for Michael Cohen said in a filing Monday.

Cohen, who formerly worked at the Trump Organization, is under criminal investigation as part of a grand jury probe into his personal conduct and business dealings, including a $130,000 payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about a sexual encounter with the married Trump in 2006.

Daniels was present in the courtroom for the hearing on Monday. "My attorney and I are committed to making sure that everyone finds out the truth and the facts of what happened and I give my word that we will not rest until that happens".

McKay said Cohen's case should be treated "like any other white-collar case", as his work as an attorney was not central to their inquiries.

Lawyers separately representing Cohen's and Trump's interests first asked the USA district court in Manhattan to block the Justice Department from reviewing the seized communications last week.

"I understand he doesn't want his name out there, but that's not enough under the law", she said. I never retained him, received an invoice, or paid legal fees. Cohen's attorney said investigators in New York City were referred by Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the Russian attack on the 2016 election, from Washington, D.C.

Todd Harrison, a lawyer for Cohen, said at Friday's hearing there were thousands of documents seized that were likely privileged, and that many related to clients other than Trump.

Cohen's team in court - and in an earlier filing Monday morning - called on Wood to appoint an independent party known as a "special master" who could review the seized communications and excise ones that were privileged. A dozen F.B.I. agents subsequently raided Cohen's hotel room at The Regency-his apartment is undergoing construction-where they literally snatched his cell phone from his hand.
