Double gold for NZ Sevens teams at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

2018 Commonwealth Games Sevens Rugby

The BlitzBoks warmed up for the pool decider with Scotland with an emphatic 52-0 defeat of a Papua New Guinea side that simply had no answer to the hard-running and support lines of the World Rugby Sevens Series leaders and spent virtually the whole game pinned deep in their own half.

There was heartbreak for the Australian womens sevens side after losing to New Zealand in extra-time in the Commonwealth Games gold medal match but even more so for Cassie Staples who kicked the ball out thinking her side had won in regulation.

The men had three pool matches yesterday and needing to finish top of the pool to qualify for the semi finals they went three for three with wins over Zambia (54-0), Kenya (40-7) and Canada (33-7).

Under the pump throughout the first half, Australia conceded a penalty with less than a minute until halftime, with the Kiwis taking a quick tap and scoring on the left through Michaela Blyde.

It was a one-sided men's final as New Zealand killed off the game with two early converted tries against a ragged Fijian defence.
