Ferrell, 50, was traveling down I-5 freeway in Orange County late Thursday in a chauffeur-driven SUV when it was side-swiped by another vehicle, TMZ reported.

Ferrell had been riding as a passenger in an SUV that was struck in the two-car incident.

Alongside fellow amusing or Die co-creator Billy Eichner, Ferrell appeared at the Oceanside event as Ron Burgundy, the fictional 1970s newsman from his 2004 San Diego-based comedy "Anchorman".

The highway patrol told CBS Los Angeles that the two-car accident happened on Interstate 5 just before 11 Thursday night around Aliso Viejo in Southern California. The driver of the other vehicle wasn't believed to be hurt.

The 50-year-old Anchorman star was taken to hospital by ambulance after his auto was hit by a sleepy driver on an Orange County freeway on Thursday evening local time.

The three men were taken to area hospitals to be checked for minor injuries, while the woman, who was bleeding profusely, was transported to a local trauma center, Kurtz said.

According to the accident report, Ferrell's vehicle was struck when another auto veered into its lane.

TMZ reported that witnesses said Ferrell was talking on his phone as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance.

Comedian Billy Eichner, who also appeared at the event, tweeted about the crash on Friday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the four people in his SUV all suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital. A 27-year-old woman in Will's auto was not wearing a seatbelt and was seriously injured, according to the Orange County Register, via Variety.

Ferrell was returning from a amusing or Die event near San Diego where he appeared as his Anchorman character Ron Burgundy.
