Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry Escalates Into Bench-Clearing Brawl

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora runs onto the field as he is introduced during ceremonies before the home against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on Thursday

The bitter rivals tangled in the seventh inning, adding another chapter to a long history that has included some memorable brawls. Tyler Austin slid into second cleats high and cleared the benches after questionable contact with Sox' Short Stop Brock Holt. But if they do, you wear it and take your base.

"The only thing I would had done different than Joe Kelly tonight", Martinez, now an analyst for MLB Network, wrote on Twitter, "is I would've hit Tyler Austin at his previous at bat".

Austin and Kelly were both ejected from the game.

Price surrendered four runs in the first inning to the Yankees.

Strong words from the Yankees' new skipper.

This was the second bench-clearing brawl of the day in the majors.

In the afternoon, the Padres and Rockies went at it after San Diego starter Luis Perdomo threw behind Colorado star Nolan Arenado. "If not this series, maybe in NY".

The Yankees vs. Red Sox bout was the second fight that happened in the league Wednesday. Arenado threw several punches, landing none, but will nearly certainly face a multi-game suspension for his actions. Martinez picked up Zimmer and threw him to the ground. The following year, the Red Sox's Bronson Arroyo hit the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez with a pitch before Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek punched A-Rod in the face.

Sanchez, who entered with just two hits, had three by the fourth inning: a home run in the first, a double in the third and another home run in the fourth, his third of the season.

Sanchez drove in four runs and Stanton had three hits and three RBIs. The Sox bullpen would once again falter allowing six more runs through the final eight innings.

An Austin RBI single gave the Yankees a 5-1 lead in the third. Trevor Williams (2-0, 1.59 ERA) will take the mound for Pittsburgh, duelling against Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 4.09 ERA).
