Video captures girls jumping off balcony to escape fire

Watch Video: Young girls jumping down a dance studio in New Jersey as fire tear through

Smoke from the fire was reportedly seen in Manhattan.

"I'm really grateful for the people who came over to help", said Twomey. "I didn't realize there was so much chaos", she says. Some are seen attempting to climb down on ladders.

Good Samaritan Tony Nehmi climbed to the roof of a building that was on fire in Edgewater, New Jersey, to rescue two girls who were trapped inside, he told ABC News.

"We looked up there, were two girls on the second floor banging on the window", said Dalton.

Once he got to the scene, he saw flames up to five feet high that began to "grow bigger and bigger".

Two men, a police sergeant and a local businessman, showed quick thinking as they forced open the dance studio's window to evacuate the trapped children.

A group of young girls and at least one adult were huddled screaming on a second-floor balcony above a vehicle wash while flames raged out the windows just a few feet behind them, according to a short video posted to the Facebook group Life in Edgewater and later on YouTube.

The fire broke out in a dance studio on Monday evening.

"Oh my god, the girls was so scared, crying and screaming", said Nehmi. But others could not reach the ladder and started to drop to the ground, desperate to escape.

The building on Old River Road also houses a hookah lounge, auto body shop and vehicle wash.

Authorities said 15 people were taken to the hospital with "non-life threatening injuries".

Twomey said that while it's unfortunate that the studio and the equipment inside were destroyed, she's "just glad everyone is safe" and that "there were no bad injuries".
