Here's Mark Zuckerberg's Written Testimony For Congress

An Update on Our Plans to Restrict Data Access on Facebook | Facebook Newsroom

Zuckerberg will testify before a joint session of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees Tuesday, and then on Wednesday, he'll appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he is expected to face similar questions. When it learned in 2015 that Kogan had shared his data trove with Cambridge Analytica, Zuckerberg said, Facebook banned Kogan's app from the site and demanded that he and Cambridge Analytica certify that they had deleted the data.

He has said the steps they will take in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal will hurt their profits. Zuckerberg will spend the next two days testifying in front of Congress, ditching his standard gray t-shirt and jeans for a suit and tie, as serious discussions of regulation will take place.

"Advertisers are not going to be too happy with all these changes cause you and I may feel more protected with our information but a lot of groups have been dependent on going into Facebook and using all this data to hyper target you and what you're interested in to send you ads", Carey said.

Facebook also started notifying a potential 87 million people, including 622,161 Canadians, if their information may have been shared with the United Kingdom -based consultancy firm that's accused of analyzing and selling social media data to political campaigns.

Only 270,00 users actually installed the app, but these users also shared the data of all of their Facebook friends with the researcher.

Zuckerberg said he's committed to working with lawmakers and safeguarding the democratic process.

Sure enough, Facebook has suspended another data analytics firm, New York-based CubeYou, which also used personality quizzes, while it conducts an audit. The story has been corrected to say that Zuckerberg made the rounds with his assistant Andrea Besmehn.

"I first called out Facebook and some of the social media platforms in December of 2016", Virginia Sen.

Associated Press reporters around the world have been surveying users, none of whom has reported seeing anything from Facebook.

New Zealand's privacy commissioner, John Edwards, said he was urgently seeking further information from Facebook on how New Zealanders data was used by Cambridge Analytica, and is working closely with his counterparts in the US, UK Australia and Canada to establish the severity and ramifications of the privacy beach.

In his written remarks, Zuckerberg called Facebook "an idealistic and optimistic company", and said: "We focused on all the good that connecting people can bring". The data collection was allowed by Facebook at the time.

Zuckerberg did not respond to questions as he entered and left a meeting with Senator Bill Nelson, the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee.

Facebook also admitted that most of its users "could have had their public profile scraped" by various third parties, without their knowledge.

For hearings past year about Russia's alleged use of social media to influence American politics, Facebook, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google sent lawyers, angering lawmakers. Given that business model, how much can Facebook really limit access to all that information? And more than 70 million small businesses now use Facebook to grow and create jobs.

He said: "I believe he understands that regulation could be right around the corner".

"People have this idea that we are going to pass omnibus privacy legislation and it is going to be a silver bullet", said Alvaro Bedoya, a former congressional aide who worked on privacy issues for former Senator Al Franken.

Facebook said the commission will last for one year and that membership will be determined in the coming weeks.
