Vatican Arrests Former DC-Based Diplomat on Child Pornography Charges

Dayton ISD music teacher, boy scouts leader charged with five counts of child pornography

The Vatican recalled Capella, the No. 4 in its Washington embassy, after the U.S. State Department notified it on August 21 of a "possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images" by one of its diplomats in Washington.

It was not possible to reach Capella, who the Vatican said was being held in a cell in the Vatican's police barracks.

A one-time top Vatican diplomat was locked up Saturday on allegations of downloading child pornography during a Christmas season visit to Canada, officials said.

After Monsignor Capella was recalled from the USA, police in Canada issued a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography online. It was alleged that while at a parish there in December of 2016, Capella had possessed and distributed child pornography.

A Vatican statement identified the accused as Msgr.

The violation carries a prison sentence of one year to five years and a fine from 2,500 euro to 50,000 euro (about $3,000-61,400).
