Australia cricket captain Steve Smith confirmed Wednesday he had been banned from playing for his country for 12 months for his role in a ball tampering plot in the test series in South Africa.

An internal investigation by Cricket Australia found that Bancroft had been guilty only of carrying out instructions "to artificially alter the condition of the ball".

Cape Town - Australian cricket captain Steve Smith is reportedly "distraught" after being told that he will be sent home from South Africa.

They were allowed to play county cricket or IPL matches, but then the BCCI took a stand against the scandal and have revelaed that neither Smith or Warner (Bancroft doesn't have a team) will be allowed to play in the 2018 IPL. Smith was replaced as the Royals skipper in the Twenty20 competition due to start from 7 April. According to media reports, David Warner had a party with his external friends in the bar of team hotel.

Tim Paine will captain Australia in the final Test match with reinforcements in middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell along with openers Joe Burns and Matt Renshaw scheduled to arrive on Thursday.

The trio will be required to undertake 100 hours of voluntary service in community cricket.

"I haven't seen all of the players but I have seen Steve Smith, and he was distraught, really upset", Sutherland said at Cricket Australia's press conference in Johannesburg.

"On behalf of Cricket Australia, I want to apologize to all Australians that these events have taken place, especially to all the kids".

Earlier this week, the International Cricket Council announced it would ban Smith for one match and fine him all of his match fee.

Both Smith and Bancroft were also charged with misleading the public after being caught by claiming they had used yellow tape rather than sandpaper. He was filmed with the tape and trying to hide it down the front of his pants.

"David Warner will not be considered for team leadership positions in the future", CA said in the statement. Lehmann's influence will be examined but at this stage he enjoys the full support of Sutherland.

Lehmann, who has been cleared of any involvement in the plot which led to Bancroft using sandpaper to scratch the surface of the ball before hiding the evidence down his pants, told reporters that the three players are "not bad people".

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke, the man Smith succeeded in the role in 2015, issued a scathing response and believes much regarding the incident has yet to be revealed. There has been a lot of talk about the Cape Town change rooms.

Smith's next game for Australia will nearly certainly be a warm-up game for next year's World Cup in England, which is followed by an away Ashes campaign.

There is more financial fallout possible with multinational electronics company LG having already said they will not renew a sponsorship with Warner, while several other partners of Cricket Australia are reviewing their positions in light of the embarrassing scandal.
