Toyota to stop selling diesel cars in Europe

Toyota sounds the death knell for diesel: Japanese giant to stop selling cars powered by the fuel in Britain and Europe by end of the year

"We will not develop new diesel technology for passenger cars, we'll continue to focus on hybrid" vehicles, said Johan van Zyl, president of Toyota Motor Europe.

According to the 2017 numbers from the company, sales of the diesel cars in Europe have fallen to mid-10%, while those of the hybrid cars have gone up to 41% in just 2 years, with a year-on-year growth of 38%.

Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines for its Land Cruiser 4x4 as well as for commercial vehicles such as the Hilux and Proace.

The Japanese company is the world's third largest auto manufacturer but it has always struggled to match that impact in Europe. "Once the knowledge that diesels are eco-friendly firms up in people's minds, then, for me, there's no reason not to buy one".

Toyota's C-HR model was launched in late 2016 without a diesel, but with a popular hybrid accounting for 78 per of sales.

For several years, HEV versions have been the dominant powertrain where offered.

"Built on the new TNGA platform (also underpinning the C-HR crossover and a variety of other future Toyota models), the 2019 Auris is 40 mm (1.6") longer than the outgoing generation, with all of them going into the vehicle's wheelbase.

The CEO of German automaker Volkswagen says businesses like his need clarity about new trade measures announced by the Trump administration before they can decide what to do. Volkswagen chief Matthias Mueller is convinced that diesel will "experience a revival", but that may be optimistic - it has a bad rap in Europe, and EVs may kill it off even if there is a resurgence.

Diesels will be phased out across the board so that by the end of this year customers of passenger cars will no longer be able to specify a diesel.

The future of diesel cars overshadowed all the gleaming new metal unveiled on the opening day of the Geneva motor show.

Strong customer demand for HEV versions on its core models means Toyota will phase out diesel engines from all its passenger cars in 2018.

Toyota has pulled the covers off its all-new Auris hatchback at the Geneva motor show, showing the world the auto that will go into production at its Burnaston factory in Derbyshire later this year.
