Business experts to help firms on 'no-deal' Brexit

The U.K. should present new text to the European Union to break a potential logjam in Brexit talks, Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster said.

The Democratic Unionist Party leader said that the United Kingdom government should write an alternative text to the EU's draft withdrawal agreement.

Following the meeting, Mr Barnier said: "The EU is looking for practical solutions to avoiding a hard border, in full respect of the constitutional status of Northern Ireland, as set out in the Good Friday Agreement".

Arlene Foster has been meeting with Europe's chief negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels today. She was accompanied by the party's Westminster leader Nigel Dodds, Brexit Spokesman Sammy Wilson and MEP Diane Dodds. It has omissions and overreaches in other areas.

The border between the UK and Ireland can not be transformed in the image of the border between the USA and Canada, Ireland's Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Monday, after the UK Prime Minister Theresa May floated the idea before the UK parliament.

Barnier conceded, however, in a press conference last week that there may need to be checks on goods coming from Northern Ireland at ports and airports in the rest of the United Kingdom should the proposal for "full alignment" be implemented.

"I am happy to say we have a shared understanding that there can not be a withdrawal agreement, much less an agreement on any future relationship between Britain and the European Union, in the absence of an answer to the Irish question", Mrs McDonald said.

The party may also stress that after Brexit, Northern Ireland companies must have unfettered access to markets across the UK. "It would be an economic catastrophe if we allowed a border between ourselves and the rest of the U.K".

The Sinn Féin leader added that there could be no overall agreement on Brexit unless the issue of the Irish border was solved.

He has said that it is incumbent on anyone who is unhappy with the draft text to bring forward legally enforceable alternatives. May had repeatedly stated there would be no hard border on the Irish island after Brexit.

Early drafts of the agreement Britain hoped to get signed off on Monday said there would be "no divergence" from European Union rules that "support north-south cooperation", later changed to "continued alignment" in a formulation that appeared to allow for subtle divergences. "It talks about giving the north-south ministerial council powers".

"We need to revisit the text", said Foster.
