Separatist groups demanding an end to New Delhi's rule have called for a shutdown in the region on Monday to protest what they described as civilian killings.

Three terrorists reportedly appeared in the Shopian village during Bhat's funeral and gave him a gun salute.

A political row followed when the police filed a First Information Report or FIR against the army and named the officer who was leading the convoy that had come under attack. Apart from these two, four more people were killed in the firing. "The extent of their role in supporting terrorists is a matter of investigation", said Brigadier Harbir Singh.

Two weapons have also been recovered from the dead terrorists, said state's director general of police SP Vaid.

The bodies of the others were handed over to their legal heirs, a police spokesman said.

The tension prevailed in Kashmir after six people including four civilians and two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed by army in Shopian last evening.

The civilians were identified as Suhail Ahmad of Pinjora, M Shahid Khan of Kilopora Malikgund and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay of Molu Trenz villages.

Another body was found on Monday morning, some 250 metres away from the site of the gunfight.

Police later found another civilian dead in a separate auto.

Rights activists accuse Indian troops in Kashmir of routinely misusing their power, killing civilians in staged confrontations for promotions or rewards and to suppress public sentiment against Indian rule.

On Sunday evening, Kashmir University students also took out a protest in the campus against the killing of the civilians by the Army.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) in Kashmir that comprises of two factions of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Geelani and Yasin Malik led Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) called for a strike against the killings, terming them "barbaric".

Meanwhile, the body of another militant, Ashiq Hussian Bhat, was found in an orchard at Saipora village.
