That's the question at the center of a new lawsuit filed by Arne Wilberg, a former YouTube recruiter who alleges the video site showed unlawful favoritism toward Black, Hispanic, and female candidates in its hiring decisions. But a year ago, Wilberg claims YouTube recruiters were told to cancel interviews where the candidate wasn't female, black or Hispanic. In August 2017, the Guardian revealed that more than 60 current and former Google employees were considering bringing a lawsuit against the company, alleging sexism and pay disparities against women. "We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity", a Google spokesperson told, adding that the company is unapologetic about hiring a wide group of qualified candidates as it helps the tech giant "build better products".

A Google spokeswoman reportedly said the company will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit.

Wilberg said that in 2016 and 2017, he and his fellow recruiters were told on several occasions to approve or dismiss job candidates based exclusively on whether they were women, black or Latino.

Silicon Valley-based tech companies, chided for hiring mostly white and Asian men in technical and leadership roles, have tried to figure out ways to develop more inclusive, diverse workforces.

According to Wilberg, he was sacked a year ago in November after he talked about the "illegal and discriminatory hiring practices" in the company.

The lawsuit was filed in January in California's San Mateo County Superior Court and alleges that Wilberg was sacked after he complained multiple times about the hiring practices. The lawsuit filed in San Mateo County Superior Court notes that the management used to delete the emails among other records that talked of the diversity requirements. Ever since, it has faced mounting pressure to improve diversity at workplace, and leave Asian and White male candidates behind.

According to Wilberg's lawsuit, Google's human-resources department began investigating YouTube's hiring practices in the spring of 2016. He claims one co-worker "complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects" during conversations about a initiative called "Project Mirror" that was to see recruiters only interviewing potential hires of their same race or gender.
