Missouri governor to be investigated by a special committee

MO Gov. Greitens steps down from RGA position

Gardener said in a statement that it is essential for residents of Missouri to have confidence in their leaders.

With his police booking photo plastered across the front pages of Missouri newspapers on Friday, Mr. Greitens sought to portray the indictment as a politically motivated miscarriage of justice orchestrated by Kimberly M. Gardner, the Democratic prosecutor in St. Louis who brought the case before a grand jury.

The indictment stated that Greitens photographed a woman with whom he had an affair "in a state of full or partial nudity" without her knowledge or consent.

Gardner, 42, defeated three other Democrats in the August primary, aided by $200,000 in late donations from a national super PAC partly funded by liberal billionaire George Soros.

Gardner, who grew up in St. Louis and earned a law degree from St. Louis University, made a decision to run for the job leading an office of about 60 prosecutors when Joyce opted not to seek a fifth term in 2016.

The second-highest ranking member of the Missouri Senate is questioning whether Gov. Eric Greitens can effectively keep leading the state following his indictment on a felony charge.

Northwest Missouri Representative Allen Andrews is among the state's lawmakers digesting the news of Governor Eric Greitens' indictment.

A local reporter spotted Greitens being taken into custody at St. Louis' Carnahan Courthouse Thursday afternoon before he was released on bond.

Greitens is a former Navy SEAL and the second youngest governor in the U.S. He was a Democrat until switching parties in 2015.

Representative Craig Redmon from Missouri's 4th district said this was a private matter and Greitens and his wife dealt with it. He says he'd vote for Greitens again, but that wouldn't be the case "if there were evidence of criminal wrongdoing or any factual evidence of abuse".

Bennecke's statement said the Republican Governors Association looks "forward to a quick resolution of this issue". He has not yet resigned his post but, according to WDBJ7, the number of lawmakers that are demanding for him to resign is growing. He was charged in St. Louis with a first-degree felony invasion of privacy.

"It will be extremely hard for the governor to effectively do his job with a felony indictment hanging over his head", Beatty said. The woman, Greitens' hairdresser at the time, said she had initially approached him for a coffee date, but that he insisted on her coming to his home, at which point the two engaged in a consensual sexual encounter.

"If the charge is that somebody has illegally taken a certain photograph, the jury is going to expect to see the photograph", Trachtenberg said. He was later released on a personal recognizance bond. He had confronted her about the affair in 2015.

Executive Director Sam Cooper suggested in a statement Friday morning that hundreds of thousands of dollars received by circuit attorney Kim Gardner from "George Soros groups" was her motivation for the indictment.

These allegations came out after an investigation into Greitens' behavior began in early January 2018.

"I did not commit a crime", he said.

Greitens' campaign for governor had access to the donor list for The Mission Continues, a veterans' charity he founded, and raised $2 million from individuals and entities that had given the charity significant contributions.
