Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall of the USA celebrate. Norway picked up the bronze medal.

"I had so much adrenaline as she was coming down, but if there's anybody I'd have 100 percent faith in coming down that finishing stretch as fast as possible, it's Jessie", said the 35-year-old Randall who is competing in her fifth Olympics.

The pair became the first American cross-country skiers to win a gold medal, capturing the women's team sprint at the Alpensia Cross-Country Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea, beating out the Swedes and Norwegians.

After Diggins reached out her foot to cross the line ahead of Nilsson, she fell to the ground and was tackled by Randall, which she called the most incredible feeling in the world.

"It feels unreal, I can't believe it just happened", Diggins told reporters.

The gold medal is especially significant for Diggins, who raced in four other events in Pyeongchang but fell short of the podium each time. The finals race was even closer, but the Americans prevailed.

Diggins, 26, had an incredibly strong push in the last lap and came from behind to win.
