The lawyer had communications with Robert Gates, a Donald Trump campaign aide who was charged alongside colleague Paul Manafort by Mr Mueller's team previous year.

The initial document released by a Washington, D.C. federal court showed Alex Van Der Zwaan lied about his interactions with Rick Gates, who has already been indicted by Mueller's office.

Gates, along with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, was indicted by Mueller past year for money laundering and conspiracy against the United States.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP issued a statement Tuesday after news broke that Alex van der Zwaan had been charged with lying to investigators.

NBC and Politico reported that Van Der Zwaan was expected to plead guilty in a court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

He is also accused of lying about the failure to turn over an email communication to the special counsel's office.

Van Der Zwaan is the son of Russian oligarch German Khan.

Prosecutors say van der Zwaan also misled them about his interaction with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates. At the time, Gates was still working with the Trump campaign.

Skadden Arps said in a statement Tuesday that the firm terminated Van Der Zwaan's employment past year and is cooperating with authorities. Around that time, Manafort was in the spotlight for the work he and Gates did in Ukraine.

The New York Times had reported last September that the Skadden law firm in New York had been asked to produce information to the Mueller investigation. She was freed after Yanukovych's ouster in 2014. Days after these reports in mid-August 2016, Manafort resigned from the Trump campaign.

President Donald Trump is again accusing his predecessor of not doing enough to prevent Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He was ousted from a pro-Trump lobbying group last April amid questions about Russia's election interference, but he continued to visit the White House as late as June, according to The Daily Beast.

There have been reports over the weekend that Mr Gates has struck a bargain with investigators and is prepared to plead guilty - though nothing has been announced.
