Michael B. Jordan: 'Black Panther shows black kids they can be superheroes'

The actor got his break after a decade as an obscure television and indie film actor when Marvel came calling in 2014 with a lucrative five-picture deal to play Black Panther.

It sees Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa return home after the death of his father King T'Chaka (John Kani), to be crowned his successor and achieve the full potency of his alter ego Black Panther.

As it turned out, that call was coming from a none other than Marvel Studios. Oh yes, if you're going to do the first black superhero movie of the modern era, this is how you do it. Like with CA:CW, Boseman plays the Black Panther with a detached grace and world-weary sadness.

The action mostly falls into the standard Marvel pattern. But in reality, Wakanda is a technological marvel, built on a vast store of the metal Vibranium, a powerful resource that has allowed the country to thrive in isolation, with vast, attractive cities hidden from outsiders by a power-shielding technology. Black Panther is like the most delicious cake you've ever tasted in your entire life, but which isn't quite cooked all the way through. I saw "She's Gotta Have It" and the characters behaved in a way I found familiar and had never seen on film before.

The upcoming film has a predominately black cast.

Then, Black Panther settles back into its groove, in which everything on the periphery is awesome (especially the Dora gods, the Dora Milaje), but the center does not hold. The film was voted the most-anticipated solo movie debut of 2018 and the second-most-anticipated movie of the year overall. But what sneaks up and floors you is the film's racial conscience and profound, astonishing beauty. It is expected to stand for something bigger than itself. The result feels revolutionary.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film has been hailed as a fresh superhero take and the most political film yet from the house of Marvel Studios as it addresses issues like identity, diversity, inclusion and history. "I was so excited because this was a movie that we felt a lot of ownership of and that we thoroughly enjoyed making".

Critics are also hailing how "Black Panther" tackles complex themes while still maintaining its sense of high action.

Along with the wonderful acting and storytelling, Black Panther soars in regards to costumes, production design and soundtrack. If you are heading out to watch the film for its opening weekend, you should watch - or re-watch - Captain American: Civil War on Netflix!

Because it is also about Wakanda, Black Panther is inherently a story about Colonialism and a vision of Africa that was allowed to thrive without the imposition of white culture and violence. Aside from the incredible representation and the gorgeous visuals, the story is terrific.

Abetting Klaue in his Vibranium-hunting is Michael B Jordan's "Killmonger", a mysterious assassin whose fascination with Wakandia is violently personal. That sharp eye and wounded heart shine through a tough exterior to illuminate a real human being. It's set to hit United Kingdom cinemas on 12 February.

If you are reading this review, you likely are well versed in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
