Philippine leader tells Suu Kyi to ignore rights criticism

Veteran U.S. mediator Bill Richardson insisted that Aung San Suu Kyi remains Myanmar's best hope for change, this statement came days after he got into a fight with the Nobel laureate and quit an global panel advising her government on the Rohingya crisis.

Suu Kyi, like Duterte, has claimed the global community is being misled by a "huge iceberg of misinformation" about human rights abuses against the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority persecuted in Myanmar for decades. It was not specified, however, when he told the Nobel Prize victor his sentiments.

In his speech, Duterte also criticized the United Nations, which had earlier called out his government over the killings linked to the war on drugs. "You're an enemy of the state", he said.

"Me? I am trying to protect my country".

According to Duterte, too much emphasis or importance for the libertarians about human rights in many parts of the world.

"If you put human rights ahead in premium of values, then one day, just like the 4 million Filipinos in the Philippines, you would lose the dignity, you erode, derogate the dignity of your fellowmen", he said.

"But with Aung San Suu Kyi, her reaction was one of the strongest against the release of the prisoners".

Since late August 2017, almost 690,000 Rohingya had fled to Bangladesh after a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine State. He said a previous commission on Rakhine State, led by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, set a valid precedent for the body that Richardson resigned from.

Attacks on Rohingya Muslims appear to be continuing in Myanmar and it is not yet safe for the hundreds of thousands living in refugee camps in Bangladesh to begin returning home, a senior United Nations official said.

The Nobel laureate has been criticized by her own fellow Nobel prize winners for her seeming lack of sympathy for the Rohingya. Tingnan mo (Look at) the Rohingyas.
