Former USA Gymnastics doctor sentenced to 175 years in prison

Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon is shown in Cowles House the presidents on-campus residence Wednesday Feb. 9 2005 in East Lansing Mich

While the media attention in the Nassar case was initially focused on his abuse while working for the national gymnastics team, Michigan State's potential culpability came into focus when The Detroit News ran a daming piece on January 18 which claims victims of Nassar's abuse reported his misconduct to at least 14 Michigan State university representatives, including Simon.

She also said that if the law did not forbid cruel and unusual punishment, what he did to his victims should be done to him. "Therefore, I am tendering my resignation as president according to the terms of my employment agreement". I nearly passed out.

The sentencing of 54-year-old Nassar was met with applaud as the victims cried and embraced.

"But after, I will be honest, I was sick", the athlete continued. It ended with Aquilina sentencing Nassar to between 40 and 175 more years in prison. So, why do I feel this way?

She told the paedophile: "You have not owned yet what you did. But I'm very, very exhausted from it".

The Lansing State Journal editorial board argued in December that Simon should step down from her post for what they described as an "inability to keep women safe from sexual assault and harassment on campus".

Delivering her statement in the courtroom, Raisman said she was surprised that Nassar was looking at her the entire time.

Before he was sentenced, Nassar, in a statement, apologised to the victims, saying, "I apologise to the victims. It was insane. I did not expect that at all". Dr. Nassar worked at Michigan State University from 1997 until 2016, and the university has faced widespread accusations of failing to investigate the accusations of his abuse.

She also thanked Judge Aquilina for allowing the victims to share their stories in open court, something Raisman said was "extremely important and meaningful".

"Being able to talk about everything all the time will help that person be able to come to you and say 'hey I was touched, and I didn't like it, '" Fox said.

MSU president Lou Anna K. Simon is expected to resign in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal.

Many athletes who testified said they felt betrayed by USA Gymnastics for ignoring their complaints.
