Intel Random Restart Bug & Data Center Performance After Patches

Mobile devices are even more vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre than computers

Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake processors are also affected. Shenoy said that Intel had issued patches for 90 per cent of Intel chips released in the past five years but that the company had "more work to do". It will provide beta microcode to vendors for validation by next week. On Jan. 11, Intel confirmed that some older Intel CPUs - specifically, Broadwell and Haswell - that had been updated with Intel's Meltdown and Spectre firmware patches were rebooting more frequently than they should be (see Spectre Reversal: AMD Confirms Chips Have Flaws).

Intel also shared initial performance results for its server platforms running two-socket Intel Xeon Scalable systems (code-named Skylake). Later, Intel published their own results after testing the performance impact of their security fixes with nearly same numbers. Hopefully a streamlined fix without these issues will emerge pretty soon after vendor testing is done next week, although Intel doesn't recommend that folks wait before patching, given the seriousness of these bugs. These benchmarks represent several common workloads important to enterprise and cloud customers. As a typical example, Intel tested a system simulating a brokerage firm's customer-broker-stock exchange interaction and found it slowed the system by four percent. More analytics testing is in process and the results will be dependent on system configuration, test setup and benchmark used.

The story was different with I/O loads, however. When CPU utilization was low (100% read case), as is the case with common storage provisioning, we saw an increase in CPU utilization, but no throughput performance impact.

Testing with storage performance development kit (SPDK) tools revealed a 25 percent performance hit when using the internet protocol-based iSCSI benchmark, using a single processor core. "For most consumer devices", Microsoft said in a statement, "the impact may not be noticeable, however, the specific impact varies by hardware generation and implementation by the chip manufacturer".
