The Center for Disease Control and Prevention contacted those who sat next to the passenger on the flight. All in all, for every 1,000 children who are exposed to the virus, one or two will die from measles. If they were infected, symptoms could develop as late as the end of the month. Of most of concern are people who have not been vaccinated. The disease is most easily spread through coughing and sneezing and can cause further complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis. If symptoms of measles develops, IDPH recommends people should call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department. "We urge everyone to make sure they and their family members are up-to-date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and all other age-appropriate immunizations".

The virus can be contracted through the air and symptoms such as rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes may not surface until days or weeks later.
