Local leaders react to Trump's offshore drilling plans

Secretary Zinke Announces Plan For Unleashing America's Offshore Oil and Gas Potential | U.S. Department of the

Governors of coastal states have urged the Trump administration to scrap its plan to usher oil and gas drilling into nearly all U.S. waters, in an unusual bipartisan backlash against the surprise proposal itself - and the controversial twist that suddenly saw Florida, alone, excused from going along with it.

The DPP would sharply expand Outer Continental Shelf waters across the country to exploration and development.

Zinke ensured Scott, a term-limited governor who is considering a Senate bid, was given credit.

According to King and Collins, the Department of the Interior will hold a public meeting to solicit feedback from local stakeholders at the Augusta Civic Center at 3 p.m. on January 22.

"You have a tremendous governor that is straightforward, easy to work for, says exactly what he means", Zinke said. Unless you are Florida, for some reason. In a statement, Zinke credited Scott with the decision to remove Florida from the Trump administration's oil drilling proposal in protected parts of the Atlantic Ocean and eastern Gulf of Mexico after the governor and pretty much every politician in Florida condemned the move. The process is expected to take at least a year. That meeting was the first "in what I believe will be a series of conversations" with other governors, the secretary said. "I will never stop fighting for Florida's environment and our pristine coastline".

Rick Scott talked the Trump administration into taking the state off their offshore oil drilling list but it is a move that was not received well in other states.

Scott is a political ally of President Donald Trump, who happens to own beachfront property in Florida. "Had Zinke cared about the wishes of coastal communities or how drilling off their coasts will affect them, he would have proposed a plan that shrinks drilling even further, not proposed expanding operations to almost every corner of our waters". "Let's figure out how we can do it safely". Brown has joined with her counterparts in California and Washington state to call the drilling plan "reckless and short-sighted".

Nelson, who has served in office since 2001, said the decision could benefit his future rival politically - a move he called pure politics, and nothing more. "But now, suddenly, Secretary Zinke announces plans to drill off Florida's coast and four days later agrees to 'take Florida off the table'".

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California said on Twitter that his state, "like Florida, has hundreds of miles of attractive coastline and a governor who wants to keep it that way". 'Where do we sign up for a waiver @SecretaryZinke?'

"Opening the Atlantic to seismic testing and drilling jeopardizes our coastal businesses, fishing communities, tourism, and our national security", the letter said.

The governors of NY and OR and the attorneys general of Maryland and California - all Democrats - were among those who called on Zinke to ban offshore drilling.

Trying not to be outdone by Scott, Nelson noted how he's fought drilling since the 1980s, when the east coast was targeted. The state is also exploring legal options to prevent offshore drilling.
