Small study suggests ibuprofen alters testosterone metabolism

Small study suggests ibuprofen alters testosterone metabolism

The study, published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), monitored 31 healthy white men aged 18 to 35.

The new study isn't the first to suggest that ibuprofen has downsides.

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or NSAIDs.

"The effects were very mild even after six weeks of regular consumption of ibuprofen, which is longer than is usually recommended in practice, so this data should not concern men who occasionally take ibuprofen for pain relief", added Imperial College London senior clinical lecturer in endocrinology Ali Abbara.

When struggling to get pregnant, couples will immediately try to find the source of the issue, but a small new study has revealed that ibuprofen could be a potential sperm killer, and it's something all trying couples should read.

Infertility in men can be caused by a variety of factors including trauma, genetic and hormonal disorders, age, weight, smoking, drug and alcohol use, and environmental toxins. This would lead to continuously low levels of testosterone, because the body could no longer compensate for the fall.

The research focused on men given 600mg of ibuprofen twice a day, which isn't the norm for the average bloke.

Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen.

Levels of luteinising hormone, which stimulates the testosterone production increased in the study participants but overall testosterone dropped. 17 men were given a daily dose of 1200mg if ibuprofen. The condition has been associated with an increased probability of reproductive, cognitive, and physical problems, as well as general mortality. The other half took a dummy (placebo) tablet.

This study might be especially troubling for athletes; Bernard Jégou, one of the study's co-authors, told CNN that many athletes take ibuprofen regularly to combat the aches and pains that accompany their sport, and warns that long-term usage like this could do irreversible damage.

"Ibuprofen works really well as a painkiller and fever-reducing medicine, so there are of course a number of cases where taking it is sensible", he says.

"Long-term use of ibuprofen has other negative effects on overall health so people should only be taking it over a period of weeks, months or years if a doctor has prescribed it".
