Amid reports that North Korea is testing nuclear missiles, airlines are rerouting flight paths to avoid North Korean airspace.

Singapore Airlines changed the route of its Seoul-Los Angeles flights in July due to concerns over North Korean missiles, Singapore's Channel NewsAsia reported Tuesday. Cathay Pacific said Monday passengers and crew on the flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong reported witnessing the flight of the Hwasong-15 ICBM.

Civic Party's Tam said although Cathay Pacific claimed its nearest aircraft was several hundred miles away, or more than half an hour's flight, from the explosion, the threat cannot be ruled out, especially if North Korea does not announce its missile launches.

The North Korean missile was sacked very high up, reaching an altitude of 4,475 kilometers (2,780 miles) before falling back into the Sea of Japan about 950 kilometers (600 miles) from where it was launched.

The missile was far from the plane, and the plane's operation was unaffected, Cathay said, adding it had informed other carriers and relevant authorities.

"There are no current routes that fly through a unsafe zone", said an Asiana Airlines official. "We remain alert and (will) review the situation as it evolves".

Singapore Airlines officials made the decision after an Air France plane glided just east of an area where a North Korean missile had flown just minutes earlier in July. Cathay Pacific's crew reported seeing the weapon re-enter the Earth's atmosphere, while Korean Air said its pilots "saw a flash".

The test-launch raised tension further with South Korea and the USA, who on Monday began their largest ever joint air exercise, which the North has branded an "all-out provocation".
