Tencent will distribute PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in China "with socialist values"

China isn't locking out PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds yet

Talk of Tencent acquiring PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer Bluehole has been doing the rounds for quite some time, with claims that Bluehole previously rejected an acquisition offer prior to the PUBG explosion.

Outside of the lack of updates in preparation for the game's full launch, the biggest problem facing PUBG users around the world is the increase in cheaters.

The English language press release about Tencent and Bluehole's partnership quotes Tencent's senior VP Steven Ma as saying: "PUBG is now the most popular survival shooter game, and is enjoyed by users all over the world".

Tencent will operate the game in the region.

In doing so, Tencent has endeavoured to curb cheating and ensure the game does not get shut down by the Chinese government, following reports that the game was "too bloody" and counter to "traditional socialist core values" as reported by VentureBeat last month.

Tencent has also promised that it is reworking the game specifically for the Chinese audience.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), one of the top-selling video games in 2017, is to be made available in China. The game also won "Best Multiplayer Game" and "PC Game of the Year" at this year's Golden Joysticks Awards.

NetEase added red banners to Wilderness, a mobile survivor game, bearing slogans such as "safeguard national security, safeguard world peace". Many of these players have been coming for China, a country that represents roughly half of the game's population but still has players enter games in non-Asian servers such as EU, NA and OCE.
