In a report by TechCrunch, the site states that Apple has acquired Vrvana in a $30 million Dollars deal, although neither company has confirmed the sale, with the site simple citing sources close to the deal.
Vrvana had been working with the likes of Audi, Tesla, and Valve, so whether that work will continue under Apple banner will have to be seen. The Vrvana site is now still up, but it stopped updating social accounts and news in August of this year.
This is different and slightly better than the methods of Microsoft's HoloLens and Windows' Mixed Reality headsets as it means the Totem is able to overlay completely opaque images and animations over the real world rather than ghost-like projections.
Vrvana has a long history with VR and AR. However, Vrvana's Totem uses "inside out" tracking with cameras to track the wearer's position and infrared sensors to track their hand positions to reduce the delay to only 3ms. This could be one reason why Apple is taking the AR tech so seriously.
