Apple acquires VRvana, heating up new AR headset rumors

Apple acquires AR startup Vrvana for $30M as it continues work on its own AR headset

Apple's rumored augmented reality headset is expected to have a dedicated display, unlike current AR and VR products that rely on smartphones or other devices, a built-in processor and a new "rOS" operating system. The new Totem also has a 120 degree field of view.

The Totem's claim to fame was that it was both an AR and VR headset.

Apple acquired the Montreal-based startup for $30 million United States dollars, two sources told the publication. Apple has neither confirmed nor denied the deal. Several of the start-up's employees are already working in Apple's California offices. The acquisition is indeed the transparent indicator of all that the company is yet hoping to develop.

In a report by TechCrunch, the site states that Apple has acquired Vrvana in a $30 million Dollars deal, although neither company has confirmed the sale, with the site simple citing sources close to the deal.

Vrvana had been working with the likes of Audi, Tesla, and Valve, so whether that work will continue under Apple banner will have to be seen. The Vrvana site is now still up, but it stopped updating social accounts and news in August of this year.

This is different and slightly better than the methods of Microsoft's HoloLens and Windows' Mixed Reality headsets as it means the Totem is able to overlay completely opaque images and animations over the real world rather than ghost-like projections.

Vrvana has a long history with VR and AR. However, Vrvana's Totem uses "inside out" tracking with cameras to track the wearer's position and infrared sensors to track their hand positions to reduce the delay to only 3ms. This could be one reason why Apple is taking the AR tech so seriously.
