Kansas jobless rate falls to 3.6 percent while labor market remains flat

Slight rise in Idaho unemployment for October

The governor's office says the rate announced Friday is down from the September rate of 3.8 percent, and it's the lowest ever recorded in Alabama.

Job gains were reported in sectors including educational and health services, leisure and hospitality, financial activities, professional and business services, other services, and trade, transportation and utilities. Both of those represent changes of less than 0.5 percent. There were 19,600 more unemployed residents over the year compared to October 2016.

Unemployment in Nebraska remains well under the national unemployment rate of 4.1%. But the agency says nonfarm employment has fallen for three consecutive months by a total of 3,900 jobs, to 495,800 in October.

Over the year, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased five-tenths of a percentage point from 3.2% in October 2016.

The U.S. unemployment rate for the month stood at 4.1 percent.

On the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, unemployment fell two-tenths of a point, to 3.1 percent. The Omaha metro area's rate of 2.4 percent also was the lowest in almost 20 years.

Omaha's unemployment rate ticked to a near 20-year low, and Nebraska's is the lowest since 1999, according to a state Labor Department report. Only Hawaii, at 2.2 percent, and North Dakota, at 2.5 percent, had lower rates.
