Roy Moore's brother compares sexual conduct allegations to the persecution of Jesus

Roy Moore

His party suddenly and bitingly divided, Alabama Republican Roy Moore ignored increasing pressure to abandon his Senate bid on Friday as fears grew among GOP leaders that a once-safe Senate seat was in jeopardy just a month before a special election.

The instant fallout followed a Washington Post report in which an Alabama woman said Moore, then a 32-year-old assistant district attorney, had sexual contact with her when she was 14. These condemnations have all come in the aftermath of the Washington Post report detailing how Moore, decades ago, had sexually assaulted a 14 year old girl and propositioned three other female minors.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee was dropped from a joint fundraising agreement that benefits Moore's campaign, paperwork filed Friday with the FEC shows.

"This is revolting and the Republican Party and everybody's who endorsed Roy Moore needs to disavow his candidacy right now and ask him to withdraw", said Sen.

Cleveland Poole, the chairman of the Republican Party in rural Butler County, said those most likely to defect were not ardent Moore supporters but voters who already have doubts. "However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside", said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Republican leaders later blamed those comments for potentially costing Republicans the Senate majority that year.

Alabama political strategist David Mowery, who has worked for candidates of both parties, said the chance of Moore bowing out of the race was "less than zero", and that it was nearly as improbable for state party officials to abandon him in favor of a last-minute write-in candidate.

"I think Alabama would elect Satan if he could get Obamacare repealed", said Jonathan P. Gray, a Republican consultant in the state who is not working on the Senate race this year.

Strange, despite the backing of President Donald Trump and much of the Republican establishment, lost a September primary to Moore.

The problem, as readily became apparent from Moore's defiant statements, is that he isn't going to step aside.

"As I said on TV tonight, I apologize when I misspoke and was not totally clear earlier today", Hannity tweeted on Thursday night.

The Jones campaign said in a statement that "Roy Moore needs to answer these serious charges".

Moore went so far as to say "that his brother is being persecuted, in his own words, like Jesus Christ was", according to Savidge.

Over the ensuing three weeks, two Post reporters contacted and interviewed the four women. Now, on the heels of that fight will be the Alabama special election on December 12 and the possibility of a Jones win. She says Moore touched her and forced her to touch him. A handful of senators suggested they would support unusual if he launched a bid, and odd told the Associated Press he would "do some more research" before ruling it out.

That view was shared by Scott Reed, a political strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who opposed Moore's nomination. He was twice removed from his Supreme Court position, once for disobeying a federal court order to remove a 5,200 pound granite Ten Commandments monument from the lobby of the state judicial building, and later for urging state probate judges to defy the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage.

Democrats familiar with the campaign being run by their nominee, Doug Jones, said no new ad buys or investments were planned to take advantage of the story.
