Death penalty for NY attacker

Trump calls New York attack suspect an 'animal' and signals scrapping lottery visa scheme

US President Donald Trump reiterated his desire for stricter US immigration laws.

On Wednesday, Trump vowed to "get rid" of the green card lottery "as soon as possible", seizing on the NY attack to press his campaign-agenda of restricting immigration.

This is because Mr Trump's comments may be used to argue that Saipov won't get a fair trial because the President has already suggested he is guilty and deserves to be put to death. But Trump's intervention may actually make it harder for prosecutors seeking a tough sentence for Saipov-who told FBI investigators that he had been inspired to carry out the attack after watching a video of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi calling for Muslims in the United States to avenge the deaths of Muslims in Iraq.

"I would certainly consider that, send him to Gitmo", Trump said, using the familiar shorthand for the detention center. But just a few hours later, the government filed federal terrorism charges against suspect Sayfullo Saipov, signaling an intent to prosecute him within the U.S.

The Islamic State did not exist when the authorization was passed.

Past presidents have kept diaries with their uncensored views of events and people, but they also have kept those entries private until long after they left the White House, presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said.

"The gist of the note was that the Islamic State [Daesh] would endure forever", New York Deputy Police Commissioner John Miller told a news conference. Saipov appeared in a NY federal courtroom on Wednesday on terrorism charges after he allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path on Tuesday in Lower Manhattan's West Side, where children and their parents were preparing to celebrate Halloween.

"I am today starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program". After winning the green card lottery, the newspaper reported that he lived in OH, and eventually found work as a trucker before marrying a fellow Uzbek immigrant in 2013.

TRT World 's Kate Fisher reports on the political implications from Washington.

As well as calling for the death penalty, Trump also suggested that he would be willing to send Saipov to Guantanamo Bay, the USA military prison in Cuba that is reserved for high-value detainees captured overseas.

Obama did wind down use of the facility and transferred many prisoners out of it, and didn't send any further detainees to Guantanamo.

Trump wrote on Twitter. "Because what we have right now is a joke, and it's a laughingstock", he said.

City leaders vowed New York would not be intimidated and said Sunday's New York City Marathon would go on as scheduled, with increased security. A 31-year-old Belgian mother was also among the dead and 12 other people were wounded in the worst attack in NY since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving member of a pair of ethnic Chechen brothers who killed three people and wounded more than 260 when they bombed the 2013 Boston Marathon in an attack inspired by the al Qaeda militant group, was sentenced to death in 2015. "And no wonder so much of this stuff takes place".
