Sanders: Indictments by Mueller Have Nothing to Do With Trump Campaign

"The real collusion scandal, as we've said several times before, has everything to do with the Clinton campaign, Fusion GPS and Russian Federation".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday scolded the media for being "completely obsessed" about Donald Trump's former volunteer campaign aide who pleaded guilty earlier this month to making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"He was a volunteer member of an advisory council that met one time", Sanders told reporters Monday afternoon during the White House press briefing.

But the bigger story came later yesterday when it was revealed that former policy adviser George Papadopoulos had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during the Russian investigation. The White House spokeswoman denied that the campaign aide was acting in an "official capacity" when he communicated with alleged Russian-tied individuals about "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

ABC White House correspondent Jon Karl asked Sanders to elaborate on White House chief of staff John Kelly's comments from Monday night when he said the Russian Federation investigation was "very distracting" to Trump and his agenda.

"This goes back to activities that took place outside the scope of the campaign", Sanders said about these charges.

In fact, Papadopoulos was contacted after he learned he'd be joining the campaign, and the professor only mentioned the "thousands of emails" after he'd been on the Trump campaign for more than a month.

Sanders emphasized that she's "not sure that the president recalls specific details" of a March 31 national security team meeting at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.in which Papadopoulos was present.

It's said that those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it; that's a truism that Donald Trump may realize sooner than later.
