Microsoft Stops Production Of The Xbox One Kinect

Despite the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro and the upcoming launch of the Xbox One X, there can be no mistaking that this console cycle will soon be entering its fifth year. Its core tech is being used in Microsoft Hololens, and it would find its home in other future products, meanwhile, the Kinect's team makes it better and better. After new game releases have slowly trickled to a stop, buyers wondering whether or not the company still has plans for the 3D camera, and a lack of fanfare in general, it looks like it's curtains for the once innovative Xbox 360 and Xbox One accessory. Dwindling sales figures forced Microsoft to ditch the Kinect and sell the Xbox One as standalone at cheaper rates.

Initially introduced as "Project Natal" in 2009, the device fascinated and intrigued many when it was finally launched as the Kinect in 2010.

The original Kinect was released on the Xbox 360 during a time when motion controls were all the rage. If you pre-order at your local Microsoft Store in North America, you can pick up your Xbox One X right at 9:00 p.m. PT/midnight ET on November 6, from the store where you pre-ordered. However, this resulted in high price of the overall bundle, which meant while Sony was selling PS4s hand over fist, Microsoft was struggling to get the Xbox One off the shelves.

The biggest factor in the Kinect's demise may be that it just wasn't much fun to play. Kinect's multiple sensors and cameras made it possible by sensing gestures and spoken commands. Microsoft's HoloLens uses Kinect technology. Additionally the Windows Hello sign-in feature which has made its way to laptops and smartphones uses a rudimentary form of Kinect to detect people's faces.
