Bombings Hit Two Mosques in Afghanistan, at Least 50 Killed

Suicide bomber kills at least 30 at mosque in Kabul

"This afternoon when a minibus carrying army cadets was coming out of the military academy, a suicide bomber on foot targeted them, martyring 15 and wounding four", defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told AFP.

A suicide bomber killed at least 30 people inside a Shi'ite mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday night, a security official said, and a separate bombing killed at least another 20 at a mosque in the middle of the country.

In a statement on its website late Friday, ISIS said claimed its fighter Abu Ammar al-Turkmani "detonated his explosive vest among the apostates" during Friday prayers in the Imam Zaman mosque in western Kabul.

The United States strongly condemned the October 20 attacks and previous attacks in Afghanistan during a week in which USA drones strikes were reported to have killed more than 30 militants in the region.

"We commend the government and security forces of Afghanistan for their response to these attacks, and we offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed", the spokesperson said.

The attack takes this week's death toll from militant attacks to 200, and is the second major attack in Kabul in the past 24 hours.

Afghanistan's Shi'ite population has been heavily hit this year, with at least 84 people killed and 194 wounded in attacks on their mosques and religious ceremonies, according to a United Nations report released last week.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Residents say attendance at local Shia mosques in Kabul on Friday has dropped hugely due to fears of being targets.
