Jack Wilshere has hit back at Troy Deeney's comments about Arsenal players lacking "cojones" to battle it out during hard games.

And despite slipping down the ranks in terms of capacity over the last decade with Premier League clubs moving to new grounds, Deeney says nothing beats St James' Park.

"As a player if your attitude is questioned, it's disgusting", Wilshere said ahead of the game in Serbia, as quoted on Arsenal's official site.

"For my players we must look inside and not outside and respect ourselves, as well".

Watford came back to defeat Arsenal 2-1 on Saturday, prompting Deeney to call out Arsene Wenger's men for being soft.

The ex-England defender said: "He actually said to me off-air, he mentioned one or two players that we wouldn't make public, that he saw didn't look like they [wanted it]". It's very easy to be critical of people especially when you've beaten them. We will see in the next match and we will see what happens.

"We did certain things wrong but we certainly didn't want to let the lead slip".

'Having a bit of cojones, I think the word is. I know who my players really are. "In the last seven games we had six wins and one draw. Comments are part of the modern game".
