A number of people were injured Saturday when a vehicle mounted the pavement outside the Natural History Museum in London and struck pedestrians, according to Scotland Yard.

11 people have been treated for injuries sustained in the incident, with nine being taken to local hospitals.

In a statement police said a number of pedestrians were believed to have been injured in the incident on Exhibition Road.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the number of injured people or the severity of their injuries.

The terror threat level in the country is "severe", which means a terror attack is highly likely.

Witnesses and footage posted on social media suggested the man was pinned down on the ground by passers-by near the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Workers in a cafe close the incident told how people fled the scene in a panic as police evacuated the area.

A BBC reporter at the scene said that she saw a auto moving "diagonally" across the road before the crash. "And it was busy, people were having to struggle to get out of there", the witness said.
