Ex-Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho sentenced to seven months in prison for tax fraud in Spain

FORMER Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho has been sentenced to seven months in jail over tax fraud.

Prosecutors were pushing for 12 months in prison, along with a €300,000 (£269,000) fine - but the Spanish court acknowledged the 39-year-old's cooperation, ordering a seven-month sentence instead.

Under Spanish law, jail terms under two years for first time offences are viewed as suspended sentences.

Carvalho, who now plays alongside former Chelsea midfielder Oscar in the Chinese Super League, is viewed as one of the best defenders to grace Stamford Bridge during the Roman Abramovich era.

Carvalho was found guilty of hiding income from image rights in 2011 and 2012 when he was playing for Madrid, totalling £490,000.

The court cited that Carvalho confessed before proceedings were brought against him and he returned the entire amount of the defrauded fee of €545,981.03.

After winning the Champions League with Porto, the defender followed Jose Mourinho to Chelsea where he won three Premier League titles.

He departed to rejoin Mourinho under the pristine spotlights of Real Madrid to add a La Liga title to his name in 2012.

Carvalho's former clubs also include Porto and Monaco, while he won Euro 2016 with Portugal at global level past year.
