Russell Westbrook and Thunder agree to $205M contract extension

Russell Westbrook

While the threat of Westbrook following Durant out the door loomed for Oklahoma City, the team was in a stronger negotiating position this time around.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook has agreed to a five-year, $205 million extension with the team.

The extension gives Westbrook the biggest contract in National Basketball Association history, $233 million over six years when combined with his $28.5 million salary this season, according to Wojnarowski.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook signed the richest contract in National Basketball Association history on Friday to remain in Oklahoma City, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. In addition, it's apparent the Oklahoma City Thunder's front office wants to make a major commitment to Westbrook as their main star heading forward.

After trading for Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, the Oklahoma City Thunder gave Russell Westbrook the largest contract in National Basketball Association history.

Kevin Durant fled the scene, leaving Westbrook in charge to spark things.

"Russell's commitment to the Thunder organisation since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade", Thunder general manager Sam Presti said.

"We are extremely fortunate to have an athlete, competitor and person such as Russell wear the Thunder uniform", Presti said. The NBA All-Star guard said in the statement that he feels "so honored" to stay a part of the Thunder organization.

Westbrook was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 National Basketball Association draft out of UCLA, and rapidly developed into one of the NBA's biggest stars. He was named to the All-NBA 1st team in the last two seasons.

Westbrook, the league's reigning MVP, has been sitting on the deal for months; the Thunder first dangled the deal in July. Westbrook led the league in scoring with 31.6 points per game to go with 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists.
