A powerful 7.1 magnitude natural disaster hit central Mexico on Tuesday the same day slated for the anniversary of the 1985 8.0 quake which claimed thousands of lives and also making it the 2nd quake in two weeks following an 8.1 quake that rocked south Mexico which killed about 98 people a fortnight ago.

The epicentre of the quake was next to Atencingo in Puebla state, some 120km (75 miles) from Mexico City, with a depth of 51km, the US Geological Survey said.

Devastating images have emerged of the aftermath following the deadly magnitude 7.1 quake that has killed 226 people, more than half of those in Mexico City.

A little over a week ago Mexico was struck by a 8.1 magnitude quake that killed over 90 people and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings. Just hours before the latest quake, many people took part in drills and commemorative events. Amidst the chaos, Juan Magana, a man who was vacationing in Mexico City say luckily the damage to his hotel wasn't severe, but he did witness several people in distress. "We are with you and will be there for you". Until further notice, Mexico City's airport, schools as well as the stock exchange will remain closed.
